There are some questions that are repeatedly asked. We will present them here in an effort to get any questions you may have answered as quickly as possible. If you do not find an answer here, please feel free to use the Contact Us form to ask. What sizes are needed? This depends on the shelter you are planning to give Snuggles to. If in doubt, ask the shelter manager what their needs are. The guideline is: - 14" x 14" for cats and small animals
- 24" x 24" for cats and small to medium dogs
- 36" x 36" for medium to large dogs
How many stitches do I need? You say "Chain/caston a length to equal desired width", but how many stitches do I need to make a certain length? The width of the Snuggle is up to you so it doesn't matter how many stitches you use as long as they are within the additional requirement of multiples indicated in the pattern. For instance, if you want to make a Snuggle 20 inches wide, you would chain or cast on the number of stitches to achieve that width. For instance, when you crochet just measure the chain length for the desired width. For knitting, typically the number of stitches times 1.5 gives you your desired width. How do I find a participating shelter? The first place to start your search online is our Worldwide Shelter Directory. Look for shelters with a Snuggle Kitten icon. Those shelters have asked to participate in the program.
If you cannot find a shelter near you with a Snuggle Kitten icon, then you will need to ask them if they accept Snuggles for the shelter animals. Sometimes a shelter worker will not be familiar with the Snuggles Project and will not know what a Snuggle is, you can help them understand by asking them if they use blankets, towels, or matting in their cages and kennels for the animals. If their answer is "yes", then they will accept Snuggles for the animals. In that case, take a minute to let us know that we should give their listing a Snuggle Kitten icon. Please remember to report all your Snuggles donations. Do you have to become a member in order to donate blankets to the shelters? No. Making and donating Snuggles is the same as it always was. Remember to report your donations. Becoming a member helps to provide financial support to the project, as well as, give you member benefits and allows you to participate in the community of Snugglers. Where do I find those clips used in the Cat Hammock? The clips (called Carbiner clips) used in the Cat Hammock pattern in the January 2006 newsletter can be found at some craft supply or home improvement stores. Look for the nylon plastic ones instead of the aluminum or stainless steel ones. If you can't find those clips, any nylon snap hook should work. We would recommend using only the nylon plastic clips as they will wash better than the metal ones. To see examples of hooks that we are referring to, click here. This link opens a PDF file.
